At Avanterra, nature is in our nature. Located in Galena Township, where 11,000 years ago the retreating glaciers at the end of the ice age left a diverse landscape of rolling hills, where 200 to 400 years ago the Pottawatomie Nation of Native Americans fished the lakes and streams and hunted the prairies and forests, where 130 years ago much of the area’s timber was milled for the rebuilding of Chicago after the Great Fire, and finally, where 2 years ago, the regions ecology and biodiversity was recognized worthy of designation as our Nations 61st National Park at the Indiana Dunes.

Avanterra, a name derived from the words “Avant” (innovative) and “Terra” (land), brings forward an innovative community land plan of 23 individual home sites, where the never more important than now guiding principal of “less is more” is applied, one that designates over 60 acres of communal open space for the common use and enjoyment of all of our residents, insuring a perpetual and predictable landscape among its future residents, a perpetual landscape that will be not too dissimilar to the way the land has existed since the last ice age, 11,000 years ago.

Just beyond the gated entrance to Avanterra, Nature Lane winds through and over 30 acres of rolling hills of restored native prairie, filled with wildflowers and swaying native grasses. It is only here, at the first crest of the wildflower prairie, framed by the 100-foot-tall hardwood forest and edged by dramatic 50’ deep ravines, does one fully grasp the beauty and simple elegance of Avanterra.

The 23 homesites of Avanterra are each placed in the landscape to both create the desired privacy of each individual home, while at the same time framing the dramatic views of the common open spaces in a way that insures the view corridors of each home-site are maintained in perpetuity. To accomplish this, each home site is uniquely located, with some tucked back into the woods, while others are tucked into the rolling hills within Avanterra prairie areas.

All of Avanterra’s home-sites are ultimately surrounded by the towering maple, beech, hickory, oak, and tulip poplar trees, providing a mosaic of green hues in the summer, the dramatic colors of autumn and the vertical brown streaks of tree bark in the winter.

Avanterra is three miles south of the Michigan/Indiana border, just minutes from New Buffalo and Three Oaks, Michigan, South Bend, LaPorte and Michigan City, Indiana. Owners at Avanterra also have convenient access to area shopping, dining, entertainment and beaches.
